¿Alguna vez has dudado sobre cuándo debes usar this y that, these y those? Pues con esta publicación vamos a ver los demostrativos en inglés. Primero veremos los determinantes y adjetivos demostrativos, y luego los pronombres demostrativos.
Determinantes y adjetivos demostrativos en inglés
Usamos los demostrativos para señalar cosas y personas físicamente y para presentar a alguien. Nos ayudan a diferenciar entre las cosas que están cerca y las que están más lejos, y se dividen en formas singular y plural.
Utilizamos this y these para referirnos a las cosas, personas o fechas más cercanas, y en cambio, that y those para lo que está situado más lejos.
Los usamos para fechas, años, tiempos… Pero será más fácil verlo con dos ejemplos:
Do you remember those wonderful holidays in Majorca in 2015?
¿Recuerdas esas increíbles vacaciones en Mallorca en 2015? (Fue hace mucho tiempo)
I’m very busy these this days.
Estoy muy ocupado estos días. (Ha sido recientemente)
De todas formas, vamos a ver cómo las usamos con algunos ejemplos útiles y actividades para que te pongas en marcha.
Determinantes, adjetivos y pronombres demostrativos en inglés son los equivalentes a los demostrativos españoles: this (ésta, éste), that (ese, esa, aquel, aquella), these (estos, estas), y those (aquellos, aquellas).
Cuando this, that, these y those están delante de un sustantivo, son determinantes/adjetivos demostrativos. This y that van delante de un sustantivo singular, mientras que these y those se usan delante de un sustantivo plural.

Quiero leer este libro de aquí.
These books here are about biology.
Estos libros de aquí son de biología.
I am reading that book there.
Estoy leyendo aquel libro de ahí.
Are those books there about history?
¿Esos libros de ahí son de historia?
Aquí hemos usado here y there para especificar dónde están. Here = aquí (cercanía) y there = ahí (lejanía). Pero con this, that, these y those ya sabemos si están cerca o lejos.

También usamos this, that, these y those para referirnos a tiempos, fechas y momentos. El presente, y tiempos del pasado (recientes, hasta ahora; o más distantes):
Presente:
I’m a bit busy this week.
Estoy un poco ocupada esta semana.
Pasado reciente:
These past few weeks have been very enjoyable.
Estas semanas pasadas han sido muy agradables.
Pasado más lejano:
That tennis tournament last year was fabulous!

Aquellos juegos a los que jugábamos de pequeños eran muy divertidos.
En ocasiones, cuando escribimos, confundimos el plural these con el singular this. Puede ser porque ambas palabras suenan igual, así que, al decirlas en nuestra cabeza, pensamos que son la misma. Pero debemos distinguirlas entre ellas. Las diferencias entre singular y plural son importantes, sobre todo cuando escribimos.
Escucha this es más corto que these, y acaba en -s, mientras these acaba en -z fonéticamente.

En ocasiones, cuando ya hemos mencionado a la persona o cosa sobre la que estamos hablando, podemos omitir el sustantivo y usar simplemente this one, that one, these ones, those ones, o incluso simplemente this, that, these y those. También damos información adicional como here (cerca), there (ahí) y over there (allí).
