Cómo hablar de películas, series y biopics en inglés

Talking about films/movies and series

Si quieres hablar sobre la última serie o película que has visto, intercambiar opiniones sobre tus gustos o pedir recomendaciones, aprende algo de léxico básico que te ayudará a comunicarte, incluyendo géneros, estilos, partes, personajes… y algunas estructuras que te servirán para expresarte como quieres:

Kinds/genres

Para romper el hielo y entablar una conversación, podrías empezar y/o preguntar/ responder de esta forma:

What genres of TV series do you like? – ¿Qué tipos/géneros de series te gustan?

What kind of movies do you like? / Are you into action movies? ¿Qué tipo de películas te gustan? ¿Te gustan las de acción?

What series are you watching right now? – ¿Qué serie estás viendo?

Have you seen this show?/ the Freddie Mercury biopic?– ¿Has visto esta serie?/ el biopic de Freddie Mercury?

What’s it about? – ¿De qué trata? The film is about…: La película trata sobre…

Puedes hablar del génerode una película así:

• It’s a/an + genre: It’s a science-fiction film – Es una película de ciencia ficción.
• It’s a mix of + genre and genre: It’s a mix of comedy and drama – Es una mezcla de comedia y drama.
• The film belongs to the … genre: The film belongs to the horror genre – La película pertenece al género de terror.

Otros términos útiles para hablar de películas:

• Cinematography – fotografía (cinematográfica)
• Soundtrack – banda sonora
• Visual effects (VFX) – efectos visuales
• Screenplay – guion
• Character development – desarrollo de personajes
• Pacing – ritmo narrativo

Con todo este vocabulario, puedes decir:

It’s an action film with lots of exciting scenes and wonderful VFX

Es una película de acción con muchas escenas emocionantes y unos efectos especiales maravillosos.

It’s a romantic comedy about two people who meet by chance. The soundtrack is gorgeous.

Se trata de una comedia romántica sobre dos personas que se encuentran por casualidad. La banda sonora es genial.

The series combines mystery and thriller elements with a complex screenplay.

La serie combina elementos de misterio y suspense con un guion complejo.

Si quieres referirte a las partes/personajes (parts/characters) de una serie o película, estas palabras te ayudarán mucho:

Algunas estructuras y expresiones comunes para ayudarte a comunicar tus opiniones en inglés sobre una serie y/o recomendarlas:

• I love this series – Me encanta esta serie
  • I’m really into it – Me gusta mucho / estoy enganchado (to be really into – encantar)
  • It’s addictive – Es adictiva
  • It’s overrated/  underrated – Está sobrevalorada/ infravalorada
  • The plot is engaging – La trama es interesante/atractiva (que “engancha”)
  • The characters are well-developed – Los personajes están bien desarrollados
  • The acting is amazing – La actuación/interpretación es increíble
  • The ending is disappointing – El final es decepcionante
  • I binge-watched the whole season in one weekend – Me vi toda la temporada en un fin de semana (to binge-watch – ver “del tirón” muchos episodios seguidos)
  • I’m trying to catch up on the latest episodes – Estoy intentando ponerme al día con los últimos episodios (to catch up on a series – ponerse al día con una serie)
  • I’m hooked on this show – Estoy enganchado a esta serie/este programa (to be hooked on a series – estar enganchado a una serie)
  • Don’t give me any spoilers /Don’t spoil the series for me, I’m only on episode 2 – No me destripes la serie, solo voy por el capítulo 2.
  • The episode ended on a cliffhanger – El capítulo tiene un final abierto
  • You should check it out – Deberías verla

Aquí tienes un ejemplo de un pequeño diálogo que podría servirte de modelo:

How to describe a film/series and give your opinion about it

Pensemos en qué términos podríamos usar para describir películas, tramas o personajes y opinar sobre ellas en una conversación:

Y ahora veamos cómo usar algunos de los términos que hemos visto hasta ahora en expresiones que podemos hacer nuestras:

• I thought it was… – I thought it was hilarious: Me ha parecido tronchante.
• I give it 8 out of 10: Le doy un 8 (sobre 10)
• It’s binge-worthy: Vale la pena hacerse un maratón (es tan buena que ves varios episodios seguidos)
• The film is exciting and fast-paced: La película es emocionante y de ritmo rápido
• The style is realistic and emotional:Tiene un estilo realista y emotivo
• Although the plot is engaging, the ending is predictable: Aunque tiene una trama interesante, el final es predecible.
• The story contains several unexpected twists: La historia contiene varios giros inesperados.
• The plot becomes more complex as the story develops: La trama se va complicando según se va desarrollando la historia.
• I found the main character very relatable: Te podías identificar con la protagonista
• The movie is slow-paced and drags at times: La película es muy lenta y a ratos se “arrastra”
• The pacing keeps the audience engaged throughout: El ritmo mantiene al espectador enganchado de principio a fin.
• The story keeps you on the edge of your seat – La historia te mantiene en tensión
• The plot thickens and the characters feel authentic – La trama se va complicando y los personajes resultan auténticos.

Algunos consejos prácticos:

• Evita opiniones demasiado categóricas con personas con las que no tengas demasiada confianza: The film is boring – I found the film a bit boring/ The film was quite slow for my taste/ I wasn’t particularly interested in the story. Puedes introducir tu opinión con expresiones como It seems to me that… / In my opinion… / From my point of view… / I would say that…: I would say that the second season is stronger than the first / From my point of view, the ending could have been better.
• Usa I think, I feel, I found – The characters are bad – I think the characters could have been more interesting / I found some of the characters a little underdeveloped/ I didn’t really connect with the characters.
• Usa adverbios matizadores: quite/ rather / a bit / slightly / fairly – The pacing was a bit slow / The plot was rather predictable / The ending felt slightly rushed / It didn’t quite work for me / It wasn’t really my cup of tea (no es de mi gusto/de mi estilo).
• Reconoce primero algo positivo y pasa después a lo que no te gusta: Positive point + however/but + criticism – The acting was excellent, but I found the plot a little predictable / The visual effects were impressive; however, the story wasn’t particularly original / I enjoyed the first season, although the ending was somewhat disappointing.

¿Y si tuvieras que redactar un párrafo para describir una serie? Quizá este esqueleto pueda resultarte útil:

It’s a crime thriller with an engaging plot and several unexpected twists. The protagonist is a complex and well-developed character, while the supporting cast is equally memorable. The pacing is fast enough to keep you interested, but it also allows time for meaningful character development. Overall, it’s a gripping and thought-provoking series.

Y para dar una opinión equilibrada (más allá de decir “it was amazing/terrible”:

Overall, I enjoyed the film. The acting was excellent and the cinematography was stunning. However, I felt that the plot was a little predictable in places. Despite that, I would still recommend it because it’s entertaining and well-made.

Un último consejo para hablar de películas o series en inglés: estudia el vocabulario que te hemos presentado, y dominando algunas palabras claves (engaging, predictable, fast-paced, gripping…) y unos cuantos conectores (however, although, while, despite that, overall), lograrás sonar bastante natural y, en lugar de memorizar frases enteras, puedes construir una opinión con una sencilla estructura:

genre → plot → characters → pacing → opinion

It’s a psychological thriller about a detective investigating a series of crimes. The plot is engaging and full of twists. The characters are well-developed, especially the protagonist. The pacing is a bit slow at first, but it becomes more exciting later on. Overall, I’d definitely recommend it.

Es una película de suspense sobre una detective que investiga una serie de delitos. La trama te atrapa y está llena de giros. Los personajes están bien desarrollados, en especial la protagonista. Tiene un ritmo un poco lento al principio, pero después se va poniendo más emocionante. En general, sin duda la recomendaría.

Para terminar, aquí tienes unos minidiálogos que te ayudarán a comentar películas o series después de verlas:

En general:

• +What did you think of the film? Did you like it?
• –Overall, yes. I enjoyed it, the acting was excellent, although the plot was a bit predictable

Sobre los personajes:

• +Who was your favourite character?

Sobre el ritmo narrativo

Sobre el final
